At HiLink, we regard safety as a non-negotiable element in every task. Whether responding to emergencies or undertaking planned projects, we ensure our team members are protected and our clients' responsibilities are safeguarded.

A critical component of this is Lockout/Tagout (LOTO). This process, also known as safe isolation, mandates that circuits and equipment must be correctly switched off, locked out, and verified as de-energised before any work commences.

This is not merely good practice; it is a legal requirement and the correct way to safeguard everyone on site.

When executing lockout/tagout procedures, we adhere to the following critical steps:

• Apply for isolation authorisation from the responsible personnel.
• Locate and verify the correct circuit and isolation device.
• Inspect approved voltage indicators and validate device status. Should equipment be damaged, cease operations immediately and report the issue.
• Confirm the tester functions correctly via the verification device.
• Disconnect the circuit using appropriate isolation devices.

• Apply safety locks at isolation points and affix warning labels. Keys must be retained by the operator.

• Re-verify the power supply status. Ensure all protective covers are removed and re-confirm correct isolation point identification.

• Use an approved tester to verify circuit de-energisation. For single-phase circuits, test all three contact points: live-neutral, live-earth, and neutral-earth. For three-phase circuits, test all combinations of phase-to-neutral and phase-to-earth connections.

• Should voltage be undetectable, reconnect the voltage indicator to the verification device for retesting to confirm its functionality.

• Work may only commence safely under these conditions.

All operations are supported by our Risk Assessment and Management Schedule (RAMS) and Toolbox meetings. Engineers receive comprehensive training on this process during induction and through ongoing site supervision.

Why is this matter so crucial?

Regrettably, accidents within the electrical industry remain all too frequent. A common cause lies in the mistaken assumption that circuits have been de-energised prior to commencing work. Such incidents could be prevented through standardised training, the use of specialist tools, and a corporate culture that eliminates cutting corners.

Our clients rely upon us to ensure safe working practices in all environments, including live retail premises, hospitals, schools, and industrial sites. This entails not only managing the risks faced by our own engineers, but also safeguarding the safety of all personnel in the surrounding vicinity.

The Distinctiveness of HiLink

We manufacture professional, standardised LOTO products while delivering bespoke custom solutions and services. Our ongoing commitment to client safety awareness training ensures lockout/tagout procedures remain paramount. Every operator is equipped with the correct apparatus, including lockout kits, voltage detectors, and verification devices. We collaborate closely with site managers and main contractors to clarify responsibilities and ensure strict adherence to permit requirements.

We never resort to sealing switches with tape or rely on verbal handovers. Every operation strictly adheres to standardised procedures.

LOTO is far more than just a padlock; it is a responsibility.
